6 Great Day Trips You Can Take from Hilton Head
Hilton Head is clearly amazing, but sometimes you want to mix things up and explore what’s nearby. The good news is that you’re surrounded by some pretty incredible places that are perfect for a day trip! You can hit historic cities, beautiful beaches, or a charming small town – all within a short drive.
Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is only about 45 minutes away and feels like stepping back in time. The historic district is packed with gorgeous squares, Spanish moss draping from old oak trees, and some seriously beautiful architecture. You can take a trolley tour to learn about the history, or just wander around and pop into the shops and cafes. River Street is great for lunch with a view, and the whole city has this relaxed Southern vibe that makes it easy to spend a full day exploring. Don’t skip Forsyth Park if you want to see that famous fountain everyone posts pictures of.
Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston is about two hours north but totally worth the drive. The food scene alone is reason enough to go, with incredible restaurants serving up Lowcountry classics. The historic district is full of rainbow-colored houses, cobblestone streets, and many hidden gardens you can peek into. You can tour old plantations, check out Fort Sumter where the Civil War started, or just walk along the waterfront. Beaufort is a smaller town about 45 minutes away that gives you that quintessential coastal South Carolina experience. Thursday evenings in summer they do a farmers market that’s really popular. It’s perfect for a half-day trip or even just an afternoon when you want a change of scenery without driving far.
Daufuskie Island
Daufuskie Island is only accessible by ferry, which makes it feel like a real adventure! The island has no bridge connecting it to the mainland, so everything moves slower here. You can rent a golf cart to explore, visit the historic sites, and enjoy beaches that are way less crowded than anywhere else in the area. The island has an interesting Gullah history that you can learn about through tours and the small Heritage Museum. There are a couple of restaurants where you can grab lunch, and the whole experience feels like going back in time to a simpler way of island life.
