9 Must-Have Items for a Beach Vacation

Hilton Head is basically one of those places that makes you feel like everything is right in the world the second you pull up to the island. The beach is stunning, it’s peaceful, and there is truly no shortage of fun things to do. But before you head out to stake your claim on the sand, there are a few things you are going to want to throw in your bag — because showing up without these is a rookie move, and nobody wants to be that person squinting into the sun with no snacks and a sad, flat towel!

A Beach Tent or Sun Shade

Okay, hear this out — a beach tent is a total game changer. The Hilton Head sun is no joke, especially in the summer months, and having a little shady spot to duck into makes the whole day so much better. It does not have to be anything fancy; there are tons of lightweight pop-up options that set up in about two minutes. Pack it in, pop it up, and suddenly you have your own little beach headquarters. Everyone will be jealous, and that is just a fact!

A High-SPF Sunscreen

This one is non-negotiable. Hilton Head sits right on the South Carolina coast, which means the sun is strong and it doesn’t take long to get a burn that ruins the rest of the trip. Go for an SPF 50 or higher, grab one that is water-resistant, and actually reapply it every couple of hours. Sunburned shoulders are not a cute souvenir, and the skin will thank everyone for looking out for it.

A Quality Cooler

A good cooler is practically a best friend on a beach day. Load it up with cold drinks, snacks, fruit, sandwiches — whatever sounds good for a full afternoon in the sun. The beach on Hilton Head is beautiful, but walking back to the car every time someone wants a snack gets old real fast. Keep everything cold, keep it close, and keep the good times going all day long.

A Large, Thick Beach Towel (or Two)

Not all beach towels are created equal. Those thin little things that soak through the second they hit wet sand are not doing anyone any favors. Go for something big and thick that can actually dry off a person and still have room to lounge on. If there are multiple people in the group, bring one for each person. There is nothing worse than hovering awkwardly because there is no dry place to sit down!

Water Shoes

Hilton Head has gorgeous beaches, but there are also some spots where shells, rocks, or the occasional horseshoe crab shell can make bare feet pretty unhappy. Water shoes are lightweight, easy to pack, and save a lot of unnecessary ouch moments. They are also great for anyone who wants to do some exploring along the shoreline or wade into the water where the footing gets a little unpredictable.

A Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated at the beach is so important, and it is really easy to forget to drink water when everyone is having fun in the sun. Bring a big reusable water bottle — ideally an insulated one that keeps drinks cold for hours — and keep it filled up throughout the day. Dehydration creeps up fast when it’s very hot, so staying on top of the water intake is key to feeling great all day long.

A Dry Bag or Waterproof Pouch

Phones, keys, and wallets do not mix well with ocean waves or a rogue splash from a toddler who has zero awareness of personal space. A dry bag or waterproof pouch is one of those things that seems small until the moment it saves an entire phone from a watery disaster. Toss the valuables in there, zip it up, and actually enjoy the water without doing that anxious glance back at the towel every five seconds.

Sand-Free Beach Mat

Here is something that sounds too good to be true but absolutely is not — sand-free beach mats are a real thing and they are amazing. These mats are made with a special mesh material that lets sand fall through when tapped or shaken, so everything on top stays clean and comfortable. Sitting on a sandy, gritty towel for hours is miserable, and anyone who has tried a sand-free mat will never go back. It is one of those upgrades that makes a huge difference in the overall beach experience.

A Good Book or Downloaded Entertainment

There is something so satisfying about spending a few hours on the beach with a great book or a downloaded playlist, podcast, or show ready to go. Hilton Head is a place where it is totally acceptable to do absolutely nothing productive for an entire afternoon, so come prepared to actually relax. Download everything ahead of time since beach Wi-Fi is basically a myth, and bring a pair of earbuds so nobody around gets an involuntary listen to whatever is on the queue.

Hilton Head is one of those destinations that makes it really easy to have an amazing time, and packing smart just makes the whole trip even better. With the right gear in tow, the only thing left to do is find a great spot on the sand, kick back, and soak it all in. See you out there!
